Dirigente deportivo estadounidense y comisionado de la NFL. Se graduó en la Universidad de San Francisco e inicialmente trabajó en relaciones públicas. Comisionado a partir de 1960, duplicó el tamaño de la liga, contribuyó a crear el Super Bowl y negoció lucrativos contratos con las cadenas televisivas. En 1966 impulsó un acuerdo para fusionar la NFL con su rival, la American Football League. En 1970 persuadió a la cadena ABC para que transmitiera Monday Night Football (Fútbol de lunes por la noche), que tuvo un éxito enorme. Durante su administración, que se extendió hasta 1989, se triplicó la asistencia de público a los partidos de la NFL.
